A Meadville teen, Derek Smith, 18, remained in critical condition at University Hospital in Columbia, Mo., Monday morning after having received injuries in a one-vehicle accident on Saturday.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that Smith was the driver of a 1999 Chevrolet Silverado truck when it ran off the west side of Route W, two miles south of Meadville at 10 p.m. Saturday. The vehicle overturned several times, coming to rest on its top in a ditch.
Smith and a passenger, Mason D. Kiehl, 18, of Meadville, both were ejected. Kiehl was transported via Air Evac Helicopter to University Hospital in Columbia. Smith was transported by Staff For Life Helicopter to University Hospital. Neither occupant wore a seat belt at the time of the accident, the patrol reported.
Kiehl was listed in “good” condition but remained hospitalized as of Monday morning, according to a hospital spokesperson. The hospital reported Smith to be in “critical” condition.
