  • Rachel Snider, Livingston County Health Centers Breastfeeding Peer Counselor, hosted the inaugural Big Latch On at the Chillicothe Farmers Market on Saturday, Aug. 3.
The Big Latch On is celebrated worldwide during World Breastfeeding Week. By allowing groups to host the event in public, they raise awareness of breastfeeding support and knowledge available in communities. It also shows communities positively support breastfeeding in public places. Snider said the first year of the event brought with it a lot of enthusiasm.
“There were eight moms and babies that participated in the event,” Snider explained. “There were also grandmas, aunts and dads and patrons of the farmers market that were there to support the moms as well. Several stopped by to say they thought what the moms were doing was great.”
“I was so happy to be able to a part of such a neat thing,” fourth-time mother Brooke Crowe said. “I love breastfeeding and I'm so happy that so many moms are now doing it, too.”
Snider said the event was important to show mothers that breastfeeding their child is the normal way to feed their child.
“Being able to see local breastfeeding moms nurse in public and be proud of it will empower any new mom,” Snider explained. “I was honored to see these moms that I have gotten to know well take a part in the Latch On and breastfeed their babies in public. They are my super moms and I am amazed by them.”
