The Chillicothe Media Cardinals Blood Drive is being held Monday, Aug. 19, from 1:30-6:30 p.m. at the Chillicothe Comfort Inn, 250 Business Highway 35 in Chillicothe. This year, the Red Cross and Chillicothe media hope to collect 50 pints of blood during the drive. Because each blood donation could help save up to three lives, 150 patients could benefit from the generosity of local readers, listeners and blood donors. Potential donors should be at 17 least years old (16 with a parental consent form), meet weight requirements and be in good health. Donors should remember to bring a photo ID. In the Missouri-Illinois Blood Services Region, the Red Cross must collect nearly 800 blood products each day to keep up with demand. Red blood cells have a shelf life of 42 days, so they must be replenished constantly. There is no substitute. Summer is a challenging time to collect enough blood donations to meet patient needs. If at least two more donors give blood at every Red Cross blood drive this summer, above what is expected, it will help ensure a sufficient blood supply is available. All blood types are needed, especially type O negative, which is the universal blood type. This means type O negative blood can be transfused to anyone who needs blood, regardless of their own blood type. It is especially valuable during emergencies, when there is no time to cross-match a person’s blood type. To schedule an appointment to donate, visit redcrossblood.org and enter sponsor code CARDS. Walk-ins will also be welcome the day of the drive. Everyone who attempts to donate blood will receive a specially designed St. Louis Cardinals T-shirt, while supplies last.
