Gerald Harris DeWitt, 87, of Chillicothe, Mo., died in his residence in Chillicothe on Friday, Aug. 16, 2013. Gerald DeWitt was born June 1, 1926, in Hale, Mo., to Laverne and Opal Harris DeWitt. When he was very young the family moved to Wheeling, Mo., and Gerald graduated from Wheeling High School. He entered the United States Army in October 1944, was wounded in action in Okinawa and was discharged in September 1945. He served as a private first class in the 32nd infantry regiment during World War II. On Jan. 16, 1971, Gerald married Helen “Annie” Lightner Strait in the Free Methodist Church of Chillicothe. She survives of the home. Gerald worked in heavy construction, building highways for most of his life. Gerald was a member of the Operating Engineers Local 101 in Kansas City, Mo. He was a life member of the Roy L. Burkett VFW Post 858 of Chillicothe and was also a life member of American Legion Post 25 in Chillicothe. His survivors include his wife, Helen Ann, listed above; two daughters Connie Cordell (Bill – deceased), of Omaha, Neb., and Darla Barnert (Ben – deceased), of Breckenridge, Colo.; four grandchildren, Kristofer Cordell, of Olathe, Kan., Matthew Cordell, of Omaha, Neb., Elizabeth Barnert Wetzler (Andrew), of New York, N.Y., and Lance Corporal Andrew Barnert, of the USMC; three brothers, Bill DeWitt, of Texas, Larry DeWitt, of Kansas City, Mo., and Richard DeWitt, of Warsaw, Mo.; many nieces and nephews. Gerald was also preceded in death by his parents; brother, Stanley DeWit, and a sister, Lois Allen. In lieu of flowers, memorials in honor of Gerald DeWitt may be made to the American Heart Association or to the Alzheimers Association and left at or mailed to Heritage Funeral Home, 3141 N. Washington, Chillicothe, MO 64601. Online condolences may be left at www.heritage-becausewecare.com. There has been a cremation. Memorial Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Aug. 25, 2013 at Heritage Funeral Home, Chillicothe. There will be a private family burial. A visitation will be held after the service at Heritage Funeral Home, and arrangements are pending under their direction.
