At the regular August meeting of the R-2 Board of Education last night (Tuesday), Superintendent Roger Barnes said that at least nine out of the past 12 years Chillicothe R-2 has been accredited with distinction. Last year, the school earned 14 out of the 14 standards. This year, however, the APR changed the scoring system and it is now based on five guidelines. It will be a percentile rank rather than based on the number of standards met.
To give Barnes an idea as to how Chillicothe R-2 would measure up, last year's scores were applied to this year's scoring guide and Chillicothe ranked in the 88th percentile. To be accredited with distinction, a school must be at or above the 90th percentile, and between 70 and 89.9 percent is just accredited.
"The (this year's) score that has been given to me on a preliminary basis, I am very, very pleased with it compared to last year's score," Barnes said. "We will have good news Friday."
There was also a tax rate hearing at the beginning of the meeting. The board approved a tax rate of $4.29 per $100 of assessed evaluation. According to the financial report, Barnes said that compared to last year's funds, "we are in good shape."
"We are very healthy financially," Barnes said. "We are on the right track."
Also on the agenda was a discussion of the bus routes and bus driver handbooks. No changes were made to the handbook, but several bus routes were amended in order to accommodate the increased number of students in the district.
Individual school reports were received and discussed. The Garrison School Board reported 29 students in their Title I classroom, 40 students in the ECSE classroom and eight students in the Autism program. Dewey Elementary School enrollment numbers include 128 in kindergarten and 160 in first grade, with 288 students total. There are 157 enrolled in second grade and 14 in third grade, totaling 197 at Field Elementary School. Central Elementary School has 134 in fourth grade and 130 in fifth grade, with 264 total students. Chillicothe Middle School enrolled 141 in sixth grade, 121 in seventh grade and 126 in eighth grade, with 388 students total. There are 140 freshman, 157 sophomores, 131 juniors and 145 seniors at Chillicothe High School, 573 students overall.
The R-2 Board of Education will meet again on Tuesday, Sept. 17.
