Wheeling Homecoming will take place Labor Day weekend in Wheeling City Park. To kick off the weekend's events, there will be a slow-pitch softball tournament Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 31 and Sept. 1. Sunday evening there will be a concert in the park featuring "Saturation Point" from 7 to 10 p.m.
The Baby Show will start the Labor Day festivities. Registration for the Baby Show begins at 9:30 a.m., and there is a $2 fee. The categories Birth to 6 months, 7 to 12 months and 13 to 24 months are all diapers only. The 25 to 47 months category is "bathing cuties" attire. The show will begin at 10 a.m. on the stage in the park. Contact Rhonda Figg at 659-2372 for more information.
The Little Mister and Miss competition will follow the Baby Show, starting at 10:30 a.m. It is open to ages four to eight and there is a $2 fee. Parents or grandparents of the Little Mister and Miss must reside in Wheeling, and the winners of the contest will ride in the parade.
A parade, themed "Happy Happy Wheeling," will follow the two contests. Registration will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the firehouse, and the parade will begin at 11:30 a.m. A dinner in the park is to follow the parade, with $8 tickets for adults and $5 tickets for children 12 and under. Special guest "Young Country" will perform at 2:30 p.m., and activities and games will take place throughout the day in the park.
"We (the community) have done this for the last 100 years or so," Paula Grozinger said. "It's just a tradition. If the weather cools off we will have a decent turn out. We usually have a nice parade with a nice parade line-up. A lot of people come for the meal and then stay for the band in the afternoon."
