The St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates have split the first two games of their NLDS series with each team dominating one game. The Cardinals scored seven runs in the third inning on their way to an easy 9 to 1 victory against the Pirates in game 1 but the Pirates returned the favor in this afternoon’s game as they got to Cardinals starting pitcher Lance Lynn early and often on their way to an easy win to send the series to Pittsburgh all tied up at 1. It amazes me that Lance Lynn has 15 wins because it seems like he looks awful every time I see him pitch. Cardinals fans in Kirksville have not had an easy time of it is these first two games as the only way to see the games locally is with Dish Network or DirecTV since Cable One and Time Warner/Turner are locked in a bitter contract dispute that sounds like it may go on for a while. I of course have Dish Network so I can watch all the games. In fairness to Cable one, today’s game was only available on MLB Network and I don’t think Cable One has ever carried that channel.
The Los Angeles Dodgers won the first game of the other NLDS series yesterday as they easily defeated the Atlanta Braves thanks to a solid pitching performance by Clayton Kershaw and the Braves whiffing every chance they got. It is hard for me to believe the Braves are in the playoffs as many times as they strike out.
The two American League NLDS series begin today with the Tampa Bay Rays continuing their cross country trek as they are now in Boston to play the Red Sox. The Rays have certainly proved they can win on the road this week but the Red Sox are well rested and should be able to win the series. The Detroit Tigers are in Oakland to play the A’s in a series that I really can’t pick the winner for. The Tigers have more experience but the A’s have more talent in my opinion so it could go either way.
The Kirksville High School Tigers football team is back on the road tonight as they travel to Booneville to continue battling Pirates. The Tigers come into tonight’s game with a 1 and 4 record while Booneville comes in at 2 and 3. KHS has played better as of late as they hung with a very talented Moberly team throughout most of that game and lost a heartbreaker to Marshall two weeks ago. Last week they played a very talented Hannibal team and hung with them pretty well throughout most of the game. This week would be an excellent time to get that second win of the season and carry that momentum into next week’s homecoming game against Mexico.
The KHS girls softball team has had a rough week losing two conference games in a row but they are still a very talented team and should do well in district competition.
The KHS girls tennis team are scheduled to play in the NCMC conference tennis meettomorrow in Fulton. Hopefully the weather will allow that to happen. The team has been up and down this year but have played excellent competition and destroyed Trenton yesterday.
The Truman State Bulldogs football team plays its first ever Great Lakes Valley Conference game tomorrow as they travel to Quincy to play the Hawks in what is likely to be the start of a new regional rivalry. Truman has played Quincy only one other time in football that I can recall and that was several years ago and Truman easily won that game. I expect them to easily win tomorrow’s game as well as it will be a historic day for Truman any way you look at it. The Bulldogs finished the non conference portion of their season with a 2 and 2 record but those two losses were against to of the top Division II programs in the nation. Tomorrow’s game should be an excellent opportunity to get the offense and defense back on track.
The Truman State volleyball team is at home tonight for a big match at 7:30 at Pershing Arena. They have already begun conference play and have played very well this year as they have one of the toughest schedules you can imagine playing many of the top teams in Division II.
The Missouri Tigers begin SEC play tomorrow by traveling to Nashville to take on a very talented Vanderbilt team. The Tigers are 4 and 0 so far this year having played a very easy non conference schedule but I think that 4 and 0 record is somewhat misleading. I don’t think they have looked overly impressive since the first game of the season and I think this starts a very rough stretch of games for Mizzou and they are going to have to start playing much better in order to win any of their upcoming games. To add insult to injury tomorrow night’s game appears to only be available locally if you have DirecTV or Dish Network thanks to Missouri’s messed up SEC television package. Man, Cable One is not having a good week!
The Kansas City Chiefs look to keep their undefeated record intact as they too will be in Nashville this weekend to play the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. The Chiefs defense has done an outstanding job and the Chiefs offense has looked good at times and not so good at others as they are still very much a work in progress. The Titans are an up and down team who are dealing with serious injuries to key players so I fully expect the Chiefs to remain undefeated.
The St. Louis Rams are home to play the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday in a game which the Rams should win but not if they play the way they have played the last two weeks. The Jaguars are not a good team but quite honestly the Rams aren’t either so this Sunday’s game may be a contest to see which team can play good enough to win.
NASCAR is in Kansas City KS this weekend to continue their Chase For The Cup odyssey. Matt Kenseth still leads the chase but Jimmie Johnson is within striking distance after his win last weekend.
Believe it or not, the NHL season is underway and the St. Louis Blues play their second game of the season tomorrow night at home against the Florida Panthers. The Blues won their season opener on Thursday night defeating the Nashville Predators. The Blues are expecting to contend for the Western Conference title this year.
Wow, what a jam packed weekend of sports and that doesn’t even include the Truman State soccer teams, the KHS boys soccer teams, the Truman State and KHS cross country teams, the KHS girls golf team, the KHS girls volleyball team and whatever else I’m missing. Please make the effort to support your area athletes this weekend. We’ll be back on Monday with a look back at a lot of this weekend’s sports action and a look ahead to what’s in store for next week. Thanks as always for checking out this and all the other blogs on this site. Follow me on titter at KDE Blog.
Have a terrific weekend!
