The Chillicothe R-2 Board of Education will hold its regular October meeting at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow (Tuesday) at the Administrative Building.
The Board is set to discuss reports on the district's guidance counseling programs. According to recent evaluations, the goals of the middle school guidance counseling program include a continued increase of involvement with the BIST process, an increase of involvement and communication with parents and community supporters and an increase of involvement in student-led projects relating to careers and community involvement.
The goals for the counseling programs at Grand River Technical School include further assistance for students in their career and educational planning, and further assistance for students in the development of making positive decisions and in learning to be accountable for their actions.
The Board will also hear reports from recent evaluations concerning school climate. The school climate reports evaluated whether there is appropriate opportunity for input from students, teachers, staff, parents and community; and whether there is an appropriate measurement instrument used at that particular grade level. According to the evaluations, future goals the pre-kindergarten through fifth grade level include continuing to utilize technology to reach parents and community. Goals at the middle school level include continuing with a parent advisory committee for CMS and increased utilization of texcaster and email alerts to get important announcements out to the public. Goals at the high school level include the utilization of meetings and surveys to attain input from all parties to maintain a school climate that promotes learning in a safe and positive environment. Goals at GRTS include making the public aware that 70 percent of all employment opportunities in the United States require technical education, and there is no unemployment for successful graduates (who want a job) of GRTS.
The Board is also set to discuss a report from Curriculum Director Susan Finlayson. The report will focus on the guidance staff’s recommendation that an English position at the high school be reinstated. According to Finlayson's report, the current English graduation requirement is four credits. The reinstatement of this position would allow students to take the most appropriate English class for needed skills development at CHS. By housing these English options at the high school, GRTS programs and state funding would not be compromised. It will also provide for small class sizes at the sophomore level where EOC testing occurs - a critical issue in regard to accreditation. Lastly, it will allow for more flexibility in student scheduling for the entire student body.
The Board will continue its assessment of board policies during the regular October meeting. Policies up for consideration include Tobacco-Free Buildings; Tax Rate Hearings and Reviews; Payment Process; Board Member Qualifications; Staff Grievances; Professional Staff Sick Leave Pool; Program for Students With Disabilities; Graduation Exercises; Student Dress Code; Weapons in School; Student Suspension and Expulsion and Reporting and Investigating Child Abuse/Neglect; Community Use of District Facilities; and Visitors to District Property/Events.
Page 2 of 2 - One item is listed on the Board's sale of surplus. A 12,000-pound, four-post drive-on alignment hoist, previously used by GRTS, is up for bid with three interested parties.
After Administrative and Board of Education Committee reports, the meeting will enter executive session to discuss student, litigation, real estate and personnel matters.
