  • Daniel L. Swagerty, 80, of Topeka, Kan., formerly of Chillicothe, Mo., died Nov. 28, 2013.
    Daniel was born March 2, 1933, in Chula, Mo., he son of Ray and Sylvia (Frizzell) Swagerty. He graduated from Chillicothe High School in 1951, the University of Missouri in 1956, and Washburn University Law School in 1968. Daniel proudly served in the United States Army and the 82nd Airborne.
    Daniel served as County Attorney in Hodgeman County and had a successful Law Practice in Dodge City, Kan. He married Mary Ann McMullan in Columbia, Mo., in 1957.
    Daniel is survived by his children, Daniel L. Swagerty Jr., MD, of Overland Park, Kan.; Debra A. Swagerty, of Topeka, Kan.; Kathryn Zack (Ron), of Leawood, Kan. Grandchildren Margaret Swagerty, Hannah Swagerty, John Swagerty, of Overland Park, Kan.; Joshua Zack and David Zack, of Leawood, Kan. Longtime loving companion Marilyn Shipp, of Chillicothe, Mo. Siblings Robert, Wanda, Sam, Sherry, Mike. Numerous nieces and nephews.
    Daniel is preceded in death by son John Laurence Swagerty, his parents and siblings Harold and Mary Lee.
    Daniel belonged to the Kansas Trial Lawyers Association, Kiwanis, American Legion, Disabled Veterans of America. He enjoyed attending events with the Senior Center in Chillicothe. He enjoyed playing golf and traveling. He was an avid reader, especially of military history, an he was very involved with the activities of his children and grandchildren.
    The last eight months, Daniel was a resident of Peggy kelly House in Topeka, Kan. Daniel’s life was enriched greatly by the compassion and dignity shown to him by the staff, and his family is very thankful for the loving care he received.
    In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Disabled Veterans of America or the Alzheimer’s Association.
    Graveside services will be at Edgewood Cemetery in Chillicothe, Mo., at a later date.
    Midwest Cremation Society of Topeka is assisting the family.
