The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) is looking for volunteers to provide free tax counseling and basic income tax return preparation next filing season in the area.
The AARP Tax-Aide program provides free training in December and January and all of the materials needed for volunteers to prepare basic individual income tax returns for taxpayers who cannot prepare their own tax returns. Volunteers are asked to give at least four hours per week between the months of February and April.
Last filing season, the AARP Tax-Aide free tax sites in this Missouri District prepared more than 3,000 federal returns for more than $281,000 in federal refunds and is once again looking for volunteers that are interested in taking a little time to learn about taxes and then helping others by preparing federal and state income tax returns for free. Those who are retired, working or taking college classes are able to help if they are able to spare the time.
Accounting experience is not required, but volunteers will need basic computer skills and some knowledge of the tax system to complete the AARP Tax-Aide Volunteer Program course.
