  • The deadline to donate to the Constitution-Tribune’s annual Operation Help greeting card is approaching.
The C-T greeting card has grown exponentially during its 18-year existence, raising thousands of dollars for Operation Help. In its inaugural year, 1996, the project garnered 379 names and $2,200. Last year, C-T readers donated $9,839.11.
Operation Help has grown, too. In 1990, Treasurer Walt Pence said the charity had aided more than 800 families and spent more than $68,000 in its first six years. Last year, Treasurer John Cook reported nearly 500 checks totaling nearly $100,000 in 2012 alone.
In a letter to the editor published in the Monday, Nov. 18, edition of the C-T, Cook said donations are down this year compared to years past.
“I can’t remember a time when our checking account balance has been this low,” Cook wrote. “I realize that the cost of food and utilities has skyrocketed and that means those that need our help will increase. We need the help of individuals, churches and organizations to help us to assist people.”
As of yesterday afternoon (Tuesday), community members had donated $1,728 to the greeting card project, down tremendously from last year’s $9,839 total. Donations start as low as $1, but some have given donations of up to $1,000. Any amount is welcomed, and all funds donated to the greeting card go directly to Operation Help.
The deadline to donate to the C-T’s greeting card is Friday, Dec. 20. The card will be published the following Tuesday, Dec 24. To donate, send money and how you want your name(s) listed on the card to Constitution-Tribune c/o Operation Help, P.O. Box 707, Chillicothe, MO 64601, or visit the C-T office at 818 Washington Street.
