  • Sometimes, some things just can’t wait. At the Narr farm near Wheeling, on the coldest day of the year, a bull calf was born.
The cow was about to calve so she was moved into a separate enclosure Sunday morning, said Crystal Narr. Almost immediately after the move, the calf was born. The mother took right to him, but with the extreme cold and wind, he was not getting dried off.
“We brought him in our shed which has a wood stove and dried him with towels with vigorous rubbing to get his blood flowing,” Narr said. “We gave him a little bit of colostrum to help him gain strength and then put him back with his mama.”
Narr reports that both the calf and its mother were doing great this morning. The high temperature Sunday was 10 degrees and the low was 11 below zero.
