Velma died peacefully of natural causes on June 6, 2014. She was comforted by her family and friends in her last days. Velma is survived by her four children, Robert Mitchell, David Mitchell, Barbara Kelch and Rick Mitchell, three grandchildren, six great grandchildren and her sister, Carol Shiflet Buxton. While raising children, Velma completed her college degree and taught science in middle school for 25 years in Southern California. When her parents became incapacitated, she moved to the Chillicothe area to care for them. She took over the family farm in Linn County and also taught at Meadville High School. Velma loved learning and was especially fascinated with science and nature, a love she passed on to her four children as well as many of her students. She took classes at MU in agriculture and became a successful farmer. She was an avid hiker and backpacker and successfully climbed many formidable mountain peaks, including Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa. She was interested in different cultures and traveled the world extensively. Velma loved the Chillicothe community and was active in many local programs. She was instrumental in starting a local Audubon Society, helping to develop the local Senior Center, supporting the Equal Rights Amendment and many other causes. Velma enjoyed volunteering to support children and families with needed services, including tutoring, volunteering for hospice, meals on wheels, the local AID Society. Sewing was a life-long passion for Velma and she especially loved making doll clothes for children. Velma’s family would like to sincerely thank the Chillicothe Community for the love and caring you have shown her. Velma counted her days in Chillicothe and environs as some of the best times of her life. Velma wished that her cremated remains be placed in an urn and interred at Parson's Creek cemetery.
