  • HALE, Mo. — The suspect who is believed to have shot a U.S. Postal Service employee at the Hale Post Office Wednesday afternoon has died from an alleged self-inflicted gunshot wound.
U.S. Postal Inspector Lori McCallister stated that at approximately 2:40 p.m. Wednesday, the suspect, Billy Bell, entered the Hale Post Office, 202 Main Street in Hale. At that time, Bell brandished a firearm and shot postal employee Michelle Bell, 42.
Bell sustained at least one gunshot wound and was transported via Lifeflight to an area hospital. Carroll County Sheriff’s office was first on the scene.
Postal inspectors for the Kansas City Field Office responded to the post office and the hospital to meet with the sheriff’s office.
Billy Bell, 50, was located by the sheriff’s office. He had sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was transported via Lifeflight to another area hospital and succumbed to his wounds early Thursday.
Michelle Bell is still receiving treatment for her wounds at the hospital.
The victim was discovered a short time later by a Hale couple who had stopped by the post office. That couple told the Constitution-Tribune that they called 911, and that the First Responders arrived, followed by the ambulance crew, and sheriff.
The Postal Inspector’s Office and the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office are handling the investigation.
Bell began working at the Hale Post Office earlier this spring, having been transferred from the Bosworth Post Office. The Hale Post Office does not have a postmaster but, rather, is managed by a regional postmaster.
A sign on the window of the Hale Post Office stated that all postal services, including post office box delivery for Hale would be available at the Bosworth Post Office until further notice.
Michelle Bell filed for divorce in May 2014, according to Case.net. The dissolution was finalized on Tuesday.
