Kindergarten and first-grade students of Dewey Elementary School gathered in the playground area Friday afternoon, unaware of what the next few minutes would bring. The students lined up, according to class, with their teachers at the front of each line. Also present was Dave Kinen, a popular Chillicothe R-2 coach and former elementary Physical Education teacher, who has been battling ALS for the last several years. He, too, was unaware of what was going to take place. Once everyone got into position, School Principal Abby Smith called for the students’ attention. “At Dewey School, we are taking the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge in honor of the awesome coach Dave Kinen, and we are challenging the rest of the staffs in the Chillicothe district at all the other schools to take the challenge," Smith announced. On the count of “3”, the staff members dumped a bucket of ice-cold water over their heads. Then, one student from each class was called upon to dump a bucket of water on top of their principal’s head. The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has been sweeping the nation to raise awareness and money for Lou Gehrig’s disease research and assistance. A video of the Dewey School challenge that was posted Friday afternoon on the C-T’s Facebook page had reached more than 19,000 people as of press time Monday, and was shared more than 220 times.
