MEMPHIS, Mo. — Scotland County freshman Will McRoberts is looking forward to getting his cast off of his left hand. The injury, suffered during the Tigers’ 34-18 loss to Highland Sept. 9 led to McRoberts being carted off the field in ambulance, nearly ended the freshman’s season.
“I’m getting the cast off sometime next week before the game Friday night,” McRoberts said. “I was worried when I got tackled that I may be out for awhile.”
With Scotland County dressing 20 players, the Tigers can use every available player. Scotland County coach Brent Bondurant was worried he wouldn’t have McRoberts available after the injury. He’s just happy to have another player available.
“I don’t like to play freshman, even if they’re good players,” Bondurant said. “He’s proven that he can be a good back and provide us with some big carries.”
A tough lesson
EDINA, Mo. — After Knox County lost 35-6 to Scotland County in its first game of the Class 1, District 10 playoffs, coach Alex VanDelft called out his player’s toughness.
He said he’s noticed an improved attitude among the Eagles.
“They’ve responded well,” VanDelft said. “They know we have two games left to play and we’re focused on North Shelby.”
VanDelft said the team’s attitude was helped by their situation.
“We initially talked about winning districts,” VanDelft said. “That’s a far-fetched idea now, but we can still get out of districts and make the playoffs.”
Community sendoff
MILAN, Mo. — Before the Milan Wildcats traveled to Princeton for their first Class 1, District 12 playoff game, the team was led out of town by the sheriff and community members were lined along the streets to send them off.
“It’s nice the people in community are behind us,” running back Cooper Bankus said. “They come out and support us every week.”
The Wildcats beat the Tigers 35-16 last week after trailing 16-14 at halftime.
Milan coach John Dabney said it's a little more motivation.
“It just makes it that much more special,” Dabney said. “It’s a little extra recognition for the kids.”
