EDINA, Mo. — Knox County coach football Alex VanDelft was furious after the Eagles lost to Scotland County 35-6 to open the district playoffs Oct. 14.
The loss marked the Eagles (5-5, 2-1 district playoffs) fourth consecutive loss and it looked like they would miss the postseason.
VanDelft didn’t feel likehis team was playing hard enough and he promised to play younger players.
Freshman Brody Moubry became one of those players.
The running back torched Schuyler County ‘s defense for 125 yards and two touchdowns in a 34-13 win last Friday that clinched Knox County a spot in tonight’s Class 1 statee playoff game at South Shelby.
“We have a large amount of freshman for Knox County,” VanDelft said. “I thought it was about time some of them showed me what they could do, so I put some freshman in there.”
Moubry was surprised that he was one of the ones that got the call.
“I had a few other carries in games, but this was my first start,” he said. “I was surprised they let me carry the ball so much.”
VanDelft said Moubry is a smart runner.
“We were having some turnover problems,” he said. “Brody was really good about covering the ball up when running with it. He seldom fumbled.”
Moubry enjoyed the step up in competition.
“It was exciting,” he said. “I don’t know why I carried it so much. I watched how everybody else ran the ball standing on the sidelines and thought it was much harder than on the junior varsity level, It’s really not that bad.”
Moubry has a chance to make an impression against the Cardinals, who enter the game as the Class 1 District 11 champions with a 6-4 record.
VanDelft thinks Moubry could make an impact again tonight.
“We’ll take whatever South Shelby gives us,” VanDelft said. “We think that Brody could be a factor.”
Moubry will be ready to go.
“I’m pretty excited,” he said. “I think we have a pretty good chance of winning. The coach said that South Shelby has a pretty good running back and some good linemen, but the way we played against Schuyler, I think we have a good chance.”
Moubry said his early varsity experience made him hunger for more.
“I plan to go to all the workouts in the summer,” he said. “I think I’ve gotten a lot better since the beginning of the year. I wasn’t sure how well we would do as a team this year. We started out winning the first couple of games and I thought we’d be pretty good. Then we lost some games, but we came back to beat Schuyler and I think we’re back on track.”
