South Shelby ran the football through and around Westran would-be tacklers with much ease behind the strength of an offensive line that featured three starting freshmen Saturday afternoon, and the Cardinals upset eighth-ranked Westran 28-14 in Class 1 quarterfinals hosted at Huntsville.
The Cardinals of Shelbina (9-4) avenged its 13-6 loss to Westran in last year’s state quarterfinals. South Shelby gets to host a Nov. 19 semifinal game against East Buchanan (12-1), who knocked off Wellington-Napoleon 36-29 to advance. The other semifinal game next Saturday has defending state champion Valle Catholic (12-1) hosting Concordia (12-1) in a rematch of last year’s contest.
Westran, state runner-up champions a year ago, wraps up its 2011 football season at 10-3.
“South Shelby is a great football team and they played really well. We just came up short. Not every body can end their football season on a win,” said Westran football coach Curtis Jasper. “Unfortunately, today was our time and we fell short of one of our goals.”
South Shelby generated about 315 yards rushing against a Hornets’ defense that has been extremely hard to move against the past three games.
Cardinals head coach Robbie Wilt praised his line on both sides of the ball and said their effort this past three games is a big reason why South Shelby is still playing football.
That line paved the way for senior running back Shawn Bertrand, who had a big day for the Cardinals.
Bertrand rushed 39 times for 259 yards, and had touchdown runs of 1,2 and 34 yards against the Hornets.
