Same time of year, same situation, tougher opponent.
The Macon Tigers are in the Class 2 Quarterfinals for the second straight year, but their path to the final four this year is not as clear cut as last year.
As you recall, in 2010, the Tigers played host to Mark Twain in the Elite Eight, and came away with a relatively easy victory.
There is no Mark Twain this season, and their is no hosting the game either.
This time, the Macon Tigers must travel for their third straight playoff game.
Their opponents for the quarterfinals are the always-tough and playoff-seasoned Falcons of Blair Oaks.
This match-up features two teams that came in runners-up in their           respective Districts; Macon came in second to the Centralia Panthers, while the Falcons played second fiddle to South Callaway.
The Falcons got some payback against the blue Bulldogs Monday night in the sectionals by traveling to Mokane and leaving with a 14-8 victory.
Macon never got the chance to avenge their one loss of the season, as the Monroe City Panthers pulled off perhaps the biggest upset of the year, a 24-21 victory at Miller Field in Centralia.
Over the course of the season, the Falcons have racked up a ton of points, scoring more than 500, but their defense has taken a few hits, allowing more than 300 points.
The Tigers may not have scored as many points, as they did last season, but their defense has shined bright, allowing a mere 46 points over the course of 12 games.
The Tiger “D” must stand up to the stout Blair Oaks offense and take advantage of the defense.
The head coach of Blair Oaks, Brad Drehle, is in his eight season at the helm of the Falcons.
Drehle’s signal-caller for the game will be six-foot 185 pound quarterback Daniel Castillo.
His main running back will be five foot-nine inch, 190 lb. Derek Otto.
His wide-receiver corps will include Tanner Kemma, Trevor Bax, Austin Kempker and Ben Cooper, every one of them a senior for the tough Falcon offense.
Castillo’s offensive line will include senior right guard Bradley Richter, who stands at 6’ 0” and weighs in at 260 pounds.
Also on the line are fellow seniors Adam Forck and Caleb Roberts, and juniors Austin Wilbers and Jacob Koelling.
The defense will also have to stand up to the volatile Macon attack.
The Falcons will line up in a 3-4 formation, with the lineman including Forck, Roberts and Richter.
Four linebackers will include Bax, Castillo and Otto, along with junior Eli Roberts, who stands 5’ 9” and weighs in at a slim 180 pounds.
After losing the first game of District play, Blair Oaks would rebound and wipe out both Hermann and Montgomery County to come in second to South Callaway.
For their first playoff game, the Falcons traveled to Clopton-Elsberry.
The Falcons would out shoot the IndianHawks for a 48-32 win.
Blair Oaks then got a big revenge win over the South Callaway Bulldogs Monday night.
Let’s just see what this Saturday has in store for the Tigers and Falcons.
