Chillicothe High School’s leadership class is once again hosting the popular Jam the Gym Night to raise money for Verelle Peniston State School. The event takes place Friday evening during the freshman, jayvee and varsity basketball games and will include drawings for large prizes, a paper airplane toss for dozens of prizes (including $100 cash), a three-point contest, and a dunking contest for children and high school students. (A signup sheet will be available the night of the event for those wishing to participate). The theme of the evening will be “Cowboys: Rounding up the Savages” as the Chillicothe Hornets take on the Savannah Savages. As in previous years, money raised through Jam the Gym will go to the playground fund of Verelle Peniston State School. “The entire event is for Verelle Peniston,” said Lillian Stover, of the CHS leadership class, which organizes the event each year. Stover said the leadership students are close to the students of Verelle Peniston and that they visit the school weekly, interacting with the students. “This is our way to give back,” Stover said. In the Flight for Cash, individuals may purchase paper (50 cents apiece) and create their own paper airplanes. Prizes that have been donated by local and area businesses will be scattered on the gymnasium floor. Participants will let their airplanes soar and the owner of the plane that lands nearest to a prize will be awarded that prize. There also will be a trash can placed at the center of the gymnasium and the person whose airplane makes it into the trash can first will be awarded $100. Big prizes to be awarded include Beats headphones, hotel lodging, training sessions with Jessica Harmon, and more. Tickets for the drawing will be sold and paper for the Flight for Cash will be sold until half-time of the varsity game. There also will be “Timeout Trivia” a series of trivia questions asked throughout the evening.
