Hobert L. “Bert” Summy, age 98, of Brookfield, died Monday, January 31, 2017, at the home of his son in Chillicothe.

Hobert L. “Bert” Summy, age 98, of Brookfield, died Monday, January 31, 2017, at the home of his son in Chillicothe.

A funeral service will be Saturday, February 4, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at Wright-Baker-Hill Funeral Home in Brookfield with Pastor Mandy Wiedeman officiating. Burial will be in Park Lawn Cemetery in Brookfield. The family will receive friends Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until time for the service.

Hobert Lilburn, son of Clinton and Grace (Dunbar) Summy, was born October 14, 1918, in Mount Sterling, Brown County, Illinois. On December 28, 1945, he mar- ried Sylvia Marjorie Green who preceded him in death January 1, 2016.

Bert was a US Army Veteran of World War II serving in the American Theatre in Panama and Europe for five years earning the rank of Sergeant. He participated in five battles, Ardennes, Rhineland, Central Europe, and Battle of the Bulge receiving the European-African- Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon with three Bronze Stars. He was a member of the Brookfield American Le- gion Post 182 and the Brookfield VFW Post 4557.

After moving to Brookfield Bert owned the Lin-Vu Drive In Theater from 1953 until 1974. He was a sales clerk for H. Tooey Mercantile Co. in Brookfield for 22 years. He was elected and served as Linn County Clerk from 1975 until 1990. He owned and managed Summy Storage beginning in 1995.

Bert was a member of the First Christian Church in Brookfield where he had served as Deacon, Elder, and Financial Secretary of the Board. He was a member of the Brookfield Elks Lodge and had the honor of having the longest continuous membership of over 50 years. He also had also been a member of the Brookfield Ea- gles Lodge, Brookfield Kiwanis Club and Brookfield Country Club.

Survivors include two children, Gary Summy and wife, Ruth of Chillicothe and Devyn Summy and hus- band, Ed Prostak of Manhattan, New York; three grandchildren, Michelle Summy of St. Joseph, Janette Leifker and husband, Scott of Fort Lewis, Washington, and Justin Summy and wife, Heather of St. Joseph; great-grandchildren, Caleb, Gavin, Suzannah, Weston, and Seth Leifker, and baby boy Summy who will be born in the spring.

Three brothers, George Summy, Harold Summy and an infant, Rowland, also preceded him in death.
