Nearly 50 Chillicothe High School band alumni will join the current CHS Symphonic Band to present a unique concert tonight (Monday) at Gary Dickinson Performing Arts Center. The concert begins at 7 p.m. and will feature the music of Claude T. Smith, former CHS band instructor. The 51st Celebrity Band Concert will also bring back former band instructors Bill Maupin and David Goodwin to the stage to serve as guest conductors, as well as current band director Sarah Cavanah and Smith’s daughter, Pam Smith Kelly, both CHS alumni. Alumni playing tonight will be graduates from 1953 through 2016. About half of them are traveling from out of town to participate. The concert will feature CHS Band alumni performing Smith’s “God of Our Fathers” with current CHS band members. Written and copyrighted in 1975, this piece was performed in 2002 for the George W. Bush inauguration. The Chillicothe High School Band will perform five of Smith’s compositions.
