Fourth- and fifth-grade students at Central Elementary School are greeted by school personnel as they enter the building for the first day of classes for the 2017-18 school year. Thursday was final first day of classes for Central School because the Chillicothe R-2 School District plans to raze the building. Next year’s fourth- and fifth-grade students will attend class at Field School in fall 2018. Next year’s second and third grades (currently housed at Field School) will shift to Dewey Elementary School for the 2018-19 school year. Students in preschool, kindergarten and first grade will attend class in the new building which is currently under construction north of the high school. R-2 Superintendent Dr. Roger Barnes stated that the district will likely seek bids in fall 2018 for tearing down the building. Garrison School, which currently houses preschool classes, is also slated for demolition after this school year.
