The Chillicothe R-2 Board of Education voted unanimously to officially approve the name “Chillicothe Elementary School” for the new school at the north end of town, and the “Early Childhood Center”, for the Pre-K wing at the new school.

The Chillicothe R-2 Board of Education voted unanimously to officially approve the name “Chillicothe Elementary School” for the new school at the north end of town, and the “Early Childhood Center”, for the Pre-K wing at the new school. A committee was selected to handle the naming of the new school, and that committee brainstormed for ideas and determined three naming options to present in the form of a survey to the community. Those names were: Litton Elementary, Grand River Elementary and the winner, Chillicothe Elementary School. Committee member Chuck Haney presented the report and recommendation after more than 58 percent, of nearly 1,700 participating survey voters, selected Chillicothe Elementary School, by a survey through social media. The addition of “Early Childhood Center” is just an organizational structure, through the Missouri Department of Education. Superintendent Dr. Roger Barnes explained that though it is not a separate entity, it is not uncommon for pre-schools to have a separate designation.
