Chillicothe issued permits for nearly $5.5 million in commercial construction projects during 2017. Topping the list of permits for 2017, according to Chuck Greever, the city’s code enforcement officer/inspector, was one issued for construction of a $1.39 million garden being constructed by the HMC  Foundation at Hedrick Medical Center. The Gardens at Hedrick Medical Center is funded through donations from individuals, businesses and organizations. The second largest project for which a permit was issued last year was for the $1.3 million re-roofing project at Chillicothe High School, according to city records. Among other commercial projects for which permits were issued in 2017 were the construction of the new warehouse and office building at Farmers’ Electric Cooperative, in the amount of $900,000; a new building for SkillPath, in the amount of $625,000; and the enclosed walkway at Chillicothe Middle School $267,000. The Gardens at HMC is not a taxpayer or hospital funded project. The HMC Foundation is a 501(c)3 entity with a mission to support the hospital in its projects and services, and help guide the direction of new programs and initiatives that expand and improve the hospital experience for patients and the community. Chillicothe issued permits for $21.5 million in commercial construction projects during 2016, the largest dollar amount since 2012. Topping the list of permits that year was one issued for construction of a $13.7 million elementary school building. The second largest project for which a permit was issued last year was for Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott, a $4.4 million project. Among other commercial projects for which permits were issued in 2016 were for construction of the new Dollar General store ($600,000), renovation of an old building for Cultural Corner Art Guild and Gallery ($550,000), construction of a new steakhouse ($500,000). Construction of residential housing was listed at a total of $550,000 in 2017, which included two duplexes and three single family dwellings. Demolition permits were slightly higher in 2017, compared to the previous year, Greever said. Last year saw a total of 15 demolition permits granted to private citizens. Nine were for houses, three were for garages, and three were for commercial buildings. There were 68 building permits issued during 2017; 100 roofing permits, 25 flatwork permits, 62 digging permits, 18 fence permits, 17 sign permits.
