On Sunday, Livingston County Sheriff’s Department deputies worked on a traffic safety enforcement grant overtime project in Livingston County.
Numerous motorists on Highway 36 were stopped for a variety of violations. The department staff issued 14 speeding citations with the slowest speed being 80 in a 65 mph zone and the fastest being 93 mph in a 65 mph zone. The average speed was 21 miles per hour over the speed limit.
Sheriff Steve Cox stated this morning that most of the citations were issued to Chicago residents who were traveling to the Royals game, taking Highway 36 instead of I70. He also stated that those traveling slower than 20 miles per hour over the speed limit were not pulled over due to the high traffic of excessive speeders.
The sheriff said that the nature and the number of tickets issued was “unreal.” “Our goal is not to write tickets,” said Cox, “it’s to educate.”
