A Mooresville man has been arrested on one count of attempted murder, three counts of felony assault, armed criminal action and illegal possession of a firearm in connection with an incident Monday afternoon near Mooresville.

Randy S. Hapes Jr., 28, is being held in the Livingston County Jail in lieu of bond following an altercation, which began at about mid-day on Monday.

Livingston County Sheriff Steve Cox said that his department was notified Monday that a subject had discharged a handgun in the direction of at least one person and was reported to have exited a building near Liv 415  while angry about a matter with one or more of the men who were lawfully on the property.

Cox said the suspect, Hapes, was allegedly standing a short distance from the group of men and pointed a semi-auto handgun at the head of at least one man and discharged the firearm. However, the victims were not struck or injured and reported a total of two shots were fired from the handgun.

The victims fled the area and notified the sheriff’s department.
In response, several LCSD staff members were called in along with the Missouri State Highway Patrol, and members of the Chillicothe Police SPIDER Unit. While some officers secured the perimeter, a briefing was held at the sheriff’s department as the information was the suspect was without means of transportation and possibly hiding out in this remote area.

The sheriff made telephone contact with the suspect and a short while later, the suspect surrendered to officers without further incident.
