Social Studies teachers at Chillicothe Middle School reported a 71 percent voter turnout for a mock election involving student voters this past week.

Chillicothe Middle School Mock Election Results were:

President: John McCain/ Sarah Palin (R) received 203 votes from sixth, seventh and eighth grade voters, a staggering 65 percent to that of Barack Obama/Joe Biden (D) who received 111 votes and only 35 percent of the overall votes.

In the governor’s race, Kenny Hulsoff (R) received 137 votes and 64 percent of the votes cast, over Jeremiah W. (Jay) Nixon (D) who received 36 percent of the vote (76).

The lieutenant governor’s race proved to be a close one among the middle school voters. Peter Kender (R) earned the majority of votes —37 percent. Sam Page (D) had 32 percent of the vote and Independent candidate Teddy Fleck had 31 percent of the votes.

In Missouri’s state treasurer’s race, more middle school students voted for Brad Lager (R) with 67 percent of the vote. Clint Zweifel (D) earned 33 percent of the votes.

The United States 6th District Representative votes tabulated gave Republican Sam Graves the upper hand with 70 percent of the vote compared to only 30 percent for Democrat Kay Barnes.

In the Missouri Secretary of State race, 62 percent of middle school votes were earmarked for Mitchell (Mitch) Hubbard (R) and 38 percent for Democrat Robin Carnahan.

In the 7th District State Representative race, Republican Mike Lair won soundly with 71 percent of the vote. His Democratic opponent, Harry Wyse earned a mere 29 percent. Mike Jones, seventh and eighth grade social studies teacher, stated that he believed the actual election would be a much closer race. (Lair was a long-time Chillicothe school teacher, and has an upper hand with the student voters.)

The majority of CMS votes cast for Missouri attorney general were in favor of Mike Gibbons (R) with 55 percent of the vote; Chris Coster (D) had 45 percent of the vote.

Jones says he was very happy with the outcome of the mock election and participation of the student body. He stated that the students made their election choices based solely on what they had learned from television, parents and teachers.........
