The care demonstrated by Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute starting many years ago made a lasting impression on an area couple. Now, appreciation of that care has the opportunity to make a lasting impression on the lives of others.

Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute received gifts totaling more than $4 million from the estate of Marilyn Lee Altenderfer. Marilyn and her late husband, Raould, were both patients at Mid America Heart Institute. Raould died in 1985. Marilyn died in 2007.

In 1998, Marilyn decided on a gift to St. Luke’s Hospital. A dedication ceremony and reception was held today (Tuesday) in the cardiac rehabilitation unit at Hedrick Medical Center to honor representatives of the Altenderfer Trust.

The gift is one of the largest received by the hospital, according to John Mullin, coordinator for the Center for Health Enhancement at Saint Luke’s Hospital.

The Altenderfer gift provides general support for cardiovascular research, education, and cardiac  rehabilitation services. Marilyn designated a portion of the funds be used “to support programs and services relating to the rehabilitation of those individuals who have heart disease in Chillicothe.”
Funds were used to purchase educational materials and new equipment for the cardiac rehabilitation unit.

“This is a tremendous gift,” Mullin said. “We are celebrating something that can be shared with Hedrick Medical Center and to recognize the generosity of Raould and Marilyn.”

Marilyn Altenderfer was a 1948 graduate of Wheeling High School. She married Raould in 1960 and they lived at the former Skyview Farms in the Farmersville area north of Chillicothe. Mrs. Altenderfer was employed as a trust officer at Citizens Bank and Trust for 30 years. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, where she served as church organist for 54 years. Raould farmed in the Farmersville community all his life.
