Doctors offices and school nurses in the area are reporting high incidences of patients suffering from flu-like symptoms and health center officials say the culprit is most likely the H1N1 flu virus.
“I would say that, yes, we should assume that (H1N1) is in our area because we’ve had lots of flu-like illness,” said Sherry Weldon, Livingston County Health Center administrator.
She noted that the center’s surveillance, which is conducted on a weekly basis, has revealed that schools and doctors in the area are seeing significantly more cases of people suffering from flu-like symptoms than last year at this time.
Because the state has already determined that the H1N1 virus is in the area, no tests are being done to confirm H1N1 influenza. (Weldon noted that individual tests to confirm H1N1 influenza costs $500 per test.) But, because the season for regular influenza doesn’t normally start until late fall, health officials are assuming H1N1 is the cause.
