The local Girl Scouts of NE Kansas and NW Missouri will officially begin selling Girl Scout cookies on Saturday, Oct. 30, 2010.  The sale will go all throughout November, ending Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2010.  Cookies will be $3.50 per box, with $2.42 per box going towards troop and council programs and activities.

Available to customers will be several old favorites, as well as a brand new cookie.  Buyers may choose from Thin Mints, Peanut Butter Sandwiches, Shortbread, Carmel deLites, Peanut Butter Patties, Lemonades and Thanks-A-Lots.  The new cookie is called the Shout-Out, a sweet, simple cookie that sports an inspirational message imprinted on its front.  It is also good for you, with 0 grams trans fat per serving, and containing no hydrogenated oils or high fructose corn syrup.

Another change this year will be a holiday pre-order policy.

“Customers have been asking for cookies in advance of the holiday season,” says Director of PR and Marketing for the Girl Scouts, Gina Garvin, in a newsletter on Oct. 14.  "So new this year some troops will have a limited supply of cookies available for purchase as they continue to take orders.”

The number of these cookies available is not set, and numbers will be limited to accommodate for the normal January delivery of the rest of the cookies ordered.
Scouts will also be holding Booth Sales in their communities on Jan. 7, 2011.

The Girl Scouts began selling cookies in the 1920s.  Today, approximately 200 million boxes of Girl Scout cookies are sold each year, with Thin Mints widely regarded as the most popular flavor. The Girl Scout Cookie Program is the largest girl-led business in the world.

“From preparing for the cookie sale to delivering to customers, girls are learning important business and interpersonal skills for future leadership opportunities," says Garvin.
