Paul Coffman, walk-on football player at Kansas State, Green Bay Packers’ all time leading receiving tight end, and former Kansas City Chief and Minnesota Viking, was the guest speaker at the North Missouri Fellowship of Christian Athletes Home Team 2009 Banquet held at United Methodist Church Tuesday, Oct. 27.
Call to order and the Pledge of Allegiance, lead by North Missouri FCA Leadership Board member Bill Gutshall, started the program. Gutshall also gave the invocation.
After dinner had been served, Pastor Alan Brock, Calvary Baptist Church, welcomed everyone in attendance.
Robin Tarpening, 2008 North Missouri FCA Volunteer of the Year presented the 2009 award. The North Missouri Volunteer of the Year recipient must: demonstrate FCA leadership and service for the school year; demonstrate a consistent personal relationship with Christ; demonstrate the character traits of a Christian role model of FCA; demonstrate a burden for and a commitment to the mission of FCA; demonstrate the commitment of time, talent and resources of FCA ministry; and demonstrate faithfulness in serving their local church. The 2009 Volunteer of the Year was Vern Wascher, who serves on the North Missouri Leadership Board.
Scouting reports were then given by: Maggie Graves, Chillicothe Middle School; Jeremy Davis, NWMSU FCA Intern; and Doug French, Chillicothe Middle School.
Robin Tarpening also presented the Athlete of the Year presentation. This year’s nominees were: Hadley Jennings, Trenton High School; Sierra Bangs, Northwestern R-1; Sarah Cast, Princeton High School; and Maria McKinny, South Harrison. The award was presented to Sarah Cast.
An area update was given by North Missouri Area Director Todd Mathew.
Alan Brock introduced the guest speaker of the night, Paul Coffman, former NFL Pro Bowl player.
Coffman, born in St. Louis, Mo., grew up in Chase, Kan.
He was a walk-on football player at Kansas State University from 1947 to 1977 where he played tight end and finished his senior season with second team all Big 8 honors.
