Alta Grace Smith

Alta Grace Smith, 86, a resident of Chillicothe, Mo., died Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010 at Indian Hills Nursing Home, Chillicothe, Mo.

She was born July 24, 1923 in Ludlow, Mo., the daughter of Frank and Lillian (Hooker) Gilliland. On Dec. 24, 1942 she married Chancey W. Smith in Chillicothe, Mo. He preceded her in death on Sept. 14, 2007.

She graduated from Ludlow High School, Ludlow, Mo., in 1941. She attended Maryville State Teacher’s College, Maryville, Mo.

Alta was a homemaker. She enjoyed birds, farming, flowers and most of all children.
She is survived by one son, Roger Smith, Breckenridge, Mo.; one daughter, Nancey Larkin and husband Mark, Carlsbad, Calif.; two brothers, Dave Gilliland and wife Betty Ann, Ludlow, Mo., Dohn Gilliland and wife Joyce, Ludlow, Mo.; seven sisters, Carol Lamb, Ludlow, Mo., Mina Lee Anderson and husband Ralph, Omaha, Neb., Nina Lou Thomas, Carrollton, Mo., Maryilyn Carson and husband Paul, St. Joseph, Mo., Nola Zeltwanger and husband Bill, St. Joseph, Mo., Janice Swanson and husband Larry, St. Joseph, Mo.; five grandchildren, Timothy Smith and wife April, Travis Smith and wife Becky, Taran Smith, Janeen Sanchez and husband Julian, and Nash NeJame; three great-grandchildren, Julian Nash Sanchez, Sofia Grace Sanchez and soon to be Abigail Grace Smith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents; two brothers, Richard and George (Pat) Gilliland.

Services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010 at Lindley Funeral Home, Chilicothe, Mo., at 10 a.m. There will be a family visitation on Friday, Feb. 12, 2010 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Friends may call on Friday from 12 until 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in McCoskrie Cemetery, Ludlow, Mo.
