C-T Editorial: Time to reclaim the school district

The Chillicothe School District is facing very difficult and tumultuous times and it appears now is the time for the district patrons, faculty, staff and board members to take control of and return the ship to safe harbor.

School to plan informational forum

The Chillicothe Board of Education last week announced generally how the district will reduce its budget by $1.65 million. We understand that it was a difficult decision to make and we know that more tough decisions remain. The board president stated at last week’s meeting that the budget cuts will hurt families in the district and will hurt the students in the district.

Continued local shopping to boost local revenues

The Constitution-Tribune reported good news stories last week showing that sales tax revenues — while down for the city and county during 2010 — were not as low as what they were expected.

Applaud R-2 for instituting plan

We applaud the Chillicothe R-2 Board of Education on their continued work and diligence in instituting a plan for the upcoming $1.65M budget cuts for the 2010-2011 school term. Now that a plan is in place, we encourage board members to meet additionally with building staff and teachers to keep them abreast of the finalization of plans.

Be wary of possible area dog-nappings

Several recent cases of missing large-breed dogs across the Chillicothe area have prompted the Livingston County Sheriff’s Department to begin an investigation into a possible dog-napping ring. We, here at the C-T, urge you to keep a look out for any suspicious vehicles or people around your home, whether you own a pet or not, and to take the precautions to keep your pets safe from such situations.

Welcome to Chillicothe Mr. Barnes

We welcome incoming R-2 superintendent Roger Barnes, along with his family, from El Dorado Springs to our community. The upcoming challenges for R-2 are tall, but Chillicothe is a great community with an abundance of parental support for our revered school district.

Ask the Canidates

In just over three weeks, Chillicothe voters will start the process of deciding who should represent them at City Hall by voting in the city’s primary election. All of the council posts but that of 3rd Ward have contests in either the primary or general election.

Take care of pets during harsh weather

Do you own an animal who feels just like part of the family? Well, in case you haven’t noticed, it’s pretty cold outside, and the weather hasn’t been the greatest. If you’ve noticed that, then surely your pet has, as well.

Passage of change order ordinance long overdue

Chillicothe City Council members will consider a measure tonight that more clearly defines who within city government will have authority and to what extent their authority reaches when approving change orders on public works projects. It is not unusual that during the course of construction projects such as streets or buildings that unforeseen changes need to be made to the original plan, thus causing the project to have a cost overrun.

Don’t cut bussing too deep

With school budget cuts still in the news, the most recent talked-about hit may be transportation. The Missouri School Boards’ Association say some fear the state could completely eliminate school transportation funding altogether. At current, Missouri law required schools to provide transportation for students who live at least 3.5 miles from school, though R-2 has provided buses for those who live at the 1 mile radius.

Submit your personal property forms

If you’re a Livingston County resident or own property within Livingston County, don’t forget to submit your personal property forms to the assessor’s office (at the county courthouse) by March 1. Failure to do so can result in a penalty of anywhere between $10 and $100, depending upon the value of property to be listed.

This time of year often leads to the creation of a New Year’s Resolution by many people – an idea of how to better one’s self, and to add a new page to the book of their life. The Get-Fit Challenge, sponsored by the C-T and the Grand River Area Family YMCA has kicked-off to a great start bringing in many participants. Weight-watchers are still encouraged to participate for their health even though they will not be in the running for a prize.
