We applaud the Chillicothe R-2 Board of Education on their continued work and diligence in instituting a plan for the upcoming $1.65M budget cuts for the 2010-2011 school term. Now that a plan is in place, we encourage board members to meet additionally with building staff and teachers to keep them abreast of the finalization of plans. We also further our board members to take a very good look at the lists of suggested budget cuts put together by the staff and faculty of each building, especially if the anticipated “worst case scenario” of 19 job cuts cannot be met through early retirees and foldings of positions, before making any additional staffing cuts. We are aware that the teachers in each building have compiled a well-thought-out list of possible budget cuts for the Chillicothe R-2 school district, and are hoping that board members are refering to such lists during this time. We also strongly urge the board to publicize the additional cuts to be made; looking at monetary totals, a staff reduction of 19 would still be less than half of the expected one-million-plus in reductions.
