With school budget cuts still in the news, the most recent talked-about hit may be transportation. The Missouri School Boards’ Association say some fear the state could completely eliminate school transportation funding altogether. At current, Missouri law required schools to provide transportation for students who live at least 3.5 miles from school, though R-2 has provided buses for those who live at the 1 mile radius. This year’s funding is the lowest over the last two decades according to data from the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. We encourage residents of the Chillicothe school district to speak with your representatives about not cutting too deep as we believe elimination of the transportation budget would discriminate against rural schools such as Chillicothe R-2.
