The Constitution-Tribune reported good news stories last week showing that sales tax revenues — while down for the city and county during 2010 — were not as low as what they were expected. Following on the heels of a year that saw a general 3 percent decrease in revenues, both the city and county conservatively expected a similar year in 2010. However, the figures were closer to just a half-percent decrease. The narrowing gap of sales tax losses is great news for the local economy and demonstrates how buying locally can make a difference. The city and county have great merchants and we encourage residents to shop local. Results of 2010’s sales tax revenues are positive indicators that come at a time when the financial picture is a little dull.
