Those interested in the future plans of nearby Swan Lake National Wildlife Refuge should plan on attending the open house tomorrow (Tuesday) from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Visitors Center at Refuge Headquarters one mile south of Sumner.

There, questions will be answered about the refuge’s draft plan, and public comment can be made. Last week, a similar meeting was held, during which, major objections were raised about the proposed draining of the refuge’s 1,800 acre Silver Lake, which impounds Turkey and Elk Creeks to furnish a fishing lake during the summer months and is the source of water used to fill their wetlands for the migratory birds and waterfowl that flock to the refuge in both fall and spring on their way to and from their northern nesting grounds.

Everyone interested in the future of Swan Lake NWR should try to attend next Tuesday’s open house at the refuge, make their desires known, and, above all, send their written comments to U.S. Fish & Wildlife, their legislators, and anyone else they want to share them with before the July 5 deadline.
