MEADVILLE — There’ll be no split championship in high school girls’ basketball in the Carroll-Livingston Activity Association this winter.
If sports events always had to be set to a hit song, the Chillicothe High School basketball Hornets probably would cue up The Shirelles’ 1961 disc, “Mama Said (There’d Be Days Like This),” to accompany their stunning 74-56 loss to the visiting Smithville Warriors last night.
In odd scheduling, Chillicothe High School’s wrestling team had only two home outings during its 2011-12 season – none until last week when it hosted Trenton. At least when the second and last one – a four-team triple-dual against smaller regional schools Ham-ilton, Marceline, and South Harrison – rolled around, the Hornets made it worth the wait.
SMITHVILLE — Having already doubled their victory production of a year ago, the now-seniorless Chillicothe High School basketball Lady Hornets, diminished by key injuries, may have to console themselves through the rest of this season by looking at it as a head start on 2012-13.
There were no surprises and, contrary to most years, only one of Thursday night’s championship-semifinal games in the annual Meadville Invitational Tournament had any late drama as the Nos. 1 and 2 seeds in both gender divisions moved on to Saturday night’s title games.
CAMERON — The Chillicothe High School basketball Hornets have had a fine turnaround season in 2011-12, but know they could be several more than two games over .500 at this juncture if they could find a way to put together four solid quarters each game.
Nearly two months into their 2011-12 season, the Chillicothe High School wrestling Hornets got their first chance to take the mat without clambering aboard a bus first. Unfortunately, the change and the return to the lineup of one of their most-veteran members couldn’t alter their recent fortunes.
Grand River Entertainment and the Chillicothe Mudcats will host their annual “Opening Pitch” reception for Eric Peterson (below), the team’s head coach of the upcoming season this evening at 6 p.m. in the Victories restaurant inside The Fast Lane Family Entertainment Center in north Chillicothe. The public is invited to attend the free event.
SMITHVILLE — Chillicothe High School Hornets freshman Kyler Sewell brought home the 113-pounds weight-class championship from Saturday’s Midland Empire Conference wrestling tournament.
We’re already well into January and this winter’s weather has been unusual to say the least, with some cold weather interspersed with spring-like temperatures and almost no precipitation.
CAMERON — With most of their lineup being freshmen or first- or second-year wrestlers, the Chillicothe High School wrestling Hornets took it on the chin three times last night in a triple dual between four Midland Empire Conference squads.
TRENTON — Two prep basketball teams ardently chasing recently-rare winning seasons found themselves knotted 33-33 at halftime at Trenton High School last night. When the game’s final buzzer sounded, the team which entered above break-even had improved its chances of staying there.
TRENTON — Despite their best intentions, executing in the late going when victory is within reach has not been a strong suit of Chillicothe High School girls’ basketball teams for a number of years.
A new coaching staff for the 2012 season of the Chillicothe Mudcats wood-bat baseball club, led by Eric Peterson, an assistant coach from a New York university, is in place, the team's sponsoring organization, Grand River Entertainment, announced today.
PLATTSBURG — A runnerup finish by freshman Kyler Sewell in the 113-pounds weight class and a third place by senior 285-pounder Austin Anderson led the showing by the Chillicothe High School wrestling Hornets in Saturday’s 11-team Plattsburg Tournament.
Both Sewell and Anderson won four of their five bouts to earn their final placement.
KEARNEY – The Chillicothe High School basketball Hornets twice lately have found out the hard way that three good quarters in a game don’t necessarily out-weigh one bad one.
Friday evening, the Lady Hornets learned that a 1-to-3 ratio of good to bad won’t necessarily work either, no matter how good the one is.
Missouri’s annual quail season will be closing three days from now on Jan. 15, and by most accounts, it has been a pretty mediocre season.
Enthused by summer and early fall accounts of an apparent increase in quail sightings, area hunters were hoping for a much better season than the last several when they walked miles and found very few birds.
KEARNEY — Chillicothe High School’s resurgent 2011-12 basketball Lady Hornets had their first opportunity to balance the books for an earlier loss yesterday afternoon. They got the job done, even if it didn’t happen easily.
Potentially vulnerable down the stretch after losing consecutive winnable games with poor fourth quarters, the Chillicothe High School basketball Hornets found themselves exposed to the same challenge – needing to finish strong to prevail – as they hosted the Maryville Spoofhounds in Midland Empire Conference play at home last night.
Although the Chillicothe Hornets basketball team is much improved this year over the past few years, it is having to re-learn what it takes to win on a more-consistent basis.
