Take double-dual from host Marceline and Centralia Tuesday, Jan. 31
MARCELINE, Mo. — Junior Erek Brose’s two wins at 195 pounds led the way Tuesday as Chillicothe High School’s wrestling Hornets completed the dual-matches portion of their 2016-17 season with a sweep of a double-dual against Marceline and Centralia.
The Hornets earned
duals wins No. 10 and 11 of the season by margins of 49-30 against Centralia and 45-31 against the host Tigers.
On the heels of a school-record-smashing 25-1 campaign a year ago, Chillicothe finished this year’s duals competition with a mark of 11-6. The Hornets won six of their last seven.
The only remaining action in the regular season is this Saturday’s tournament at Richmond.
The following Friday night and Saturday, the Hornets’ varsity lineup will participate in the state-tournament-qualifier Class 2 district tourney at Excelsior Springs.
In Tuesday’s matches at Marceline, Brose was one of four Hornets to pick up a pair of triumphs, but the only one to do so by actually wrestling twice.
Against Centralia, the junior upper-weights competitor out-pointed Quentin Foster 6-2 before pinning Nick Fontenot of Marceline in 1:44.
The pair of conquests pushed Brose over the .500 mark for the season at 16-15.
Two Chillicothe grapplers won twice on the mat, one won once by forfeit and once by fall, and one gained two “gimmes.”
Freshman Colton Sew-ell finished off Austin Dawson of Centralia’s Panthers in 2:33 in a bout in the 106-pounds weight division. Marceline then did not have anyone for that weight.
Hornet Chase Minnick won by fall over Grafton Littrell of Centralia at 5:30 and then shut out Cullen Bruner of the host school by a 5-0 margin.
Chillicothe 160-pounds entry, Dean Adkins III, did not have a foe in either dual, but advanced his season record to 37-3, the same as Minnick’s.
The Chillicothe victory over Centralia saw both sides have two “open” classes, leaving the outcome to be decided by the 10 competed bouts.
Of those 10, the Hornets claimed six, four by fall.
The highlight win came from senior middleweight Joey Thompson, who took care of Hunter Griggs after only 20 seconds.
In addition to Minnick’s win by pin, 285-pounds Keegan Valdez stopped his foe after 5:15 and Bryce Larson won at 138 in 4:22.
Chillicothe’s Kayde Burton earned a 16-3 major decision at 182.
Facing Marceline, CHS got 30 free points from the 106-, 113-, 120-, 126-, 160, and 285-pounds classes.
It captured only three of the five contested bouts. In addition to Minnick’s 38th triumph of the year and Brose’s pin, 145-pounds senior Zach Blixt won by fall in 1:50.
