Eagles turned back visiting La Plata Monday in battle of league unbeatens. Hamilton boys get back on winning track

MEADVILLE, Mo. — The key game of the C-T-area high school basketball scene Monday was the Tri-County Conference boys’ title showdown between league unbeatens Meadville and La Plata at Meadville. When the figurative dust settled, the host Eagles had clinched a share of the 2016-17 crown.
Speeding to a 21-11 lead after one period, the MHS boys (19-3, 7-0 conf.) still led by 10 at the half. La Plata had a big third stanza to draw within 32-30 after three, but the Eagles staved off the threat.
Ryan Young’s 13 points-11 rebounds double-double led Meadville. He also had two shot blocks and, like three teammates, assisted on two buckets. Jase Cowan, hitting four of seven from both the field and foul line, added 12 points and seven boards.
Dillon Seckington had nine tallies, six caroms, two shot blocks, and two steals, and freshman Dominik Gannan had a team-high three steals.
The Eagles prevailed despite 4-of-20 shooting from outside the arc and 14-of-28 free-throw shooting.
Meadville’s boys can wrap up the TCC title outright Friday when they host Bucklin/Macon County R-4.
Meadville’s girls (10-12, 5-2 conf.) fell to La Plata 42-32, despite Karlin Fairchild hitting four of her six 3-points tries. She had 12 points.

Hamilton’s Hornets (16-5) recovered from back-to-back losses to rip neighbor Cameron 71-49 on the road. LaTroy Harper led Hamilton with 21 points, Jaran Richman tallied 18 – including four treys, and Wesley Pratt scored 11.
Having visited East Buchanan for KCI Conference play last night, Hamilton will be at Mid-Buchanan Friday for more conference action.
