Their task made easier physically by two potential foes dropping out of the event, the Chillicothe Cardinals senior (AAA) American Legion baseball team will seek to add the District 1-2 Tournament championship to its 2017 regular-season crown this weekend at Trenton.
If they do so, the Vern R. Glick Post No. 25-sponsored Cardinals will qualify for the Missouri American Legion Zone 1 (eastern Missouri) Tournament for the first time in 10 years (Chillicothe didn’t have a senior Legion team in 2009-10). This year’s zone event will take place at Washington, Mo., next week.
This summer’s senior Cardinals (14-5-1) begin the tournament at Burleigh Grimes Field in Trenton’s Eastside Park this evening at 5, facing the host Post 31 Bluejays. Chillicothe swept three games against Trenton during the regular season by varying margins, but one was a 5-2 contest, so the Bluejays will not be pushovers.
Should the Cardinals prevail tonight, they’d take on either Kirksville/Moberly or Green City in the 4-teams tourney’s winners’-bracket final at noon tomorrow (Saturday).
A loss in the double-elimination-format tournament would mean a 3 p.m. game tomorrow, also against either Green City or Kirksville/Moberly.
The tournament’s championship-round play is to be Sunday, beginning at noon.
The only district opponent to defeat Chillicothe during the regular season – Hannibal – is one of the two teams without enough available players to take part in the tournament.

TRENTON — The verdict is in – this week’s Missouri American Legion baseball Districts 1-2 AAA (senior) division tournament will involve only four of its six potential teams and will start Friday.
2017 district commissioner Joshua Lisle on Monday afternoon released the tournament bracket after receiving official confirmation from management of the Brookfield-based North Central Missouri Falcons that the team would not have enough players available to play.
That leaves the top-seeded Chillicothe Cardinals – sponsored by Vern R. Glick Post No. 25 – and squads from Trenton, Kirksville/Moberly, and Green City to compete for the district’s berth in next week’s Missouri Zone 1 (eastern Missouri) Tournament at Washington.
Chillicothe (14-5-1) and Trenton will open the tourney against each other Friday at 5 p.m. at Burleigh Grimes Field in Trenton’s Eastside Park. Green City and Kirksville/Moberly then will battle.
Saturday has three games scheduled – the winners’ final between Friday’s victors at noon, the losers’ semifinal between Friday’s losers at 3 p.m., and the losers’ final between the noon loser and 3 p.m. winner at about 6 p.m.
The championship-round game or games will be Sunday, starting at noon.
