Hannah Cypert and Hunter Keithley fell to Palmyra entry 1-6, 2-6 in first round of Class 1 girls' state tournament, then lost to Springfield Catholic duo 2-6, 0-6 in state debut

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Chillicothe (Mo.) High School’s Hannah Cypert and Hunter Keithley were not able to extend their participation in the Class 1 girls' tennis state tournament into a second day, losing both matches they played Friday (Oct. 16) to be eliminated from the doubles competition.

Friday afternoon,  in the consolation bracket after dropping their opening-round match in the tourney that morning, they were defeated by the Erin Jarvis/Cecilia Bailey duo of  Springfield Catholic 2-6, 0-6, according to scores posted online by the sponsoring Missouri State High School Activities Association.
In their state-level debut, the CHS junior-sophomore tandem had fallen to Kendra Maples and Emmy Griesbaum of Palmyra 1-6, 2-6 in first-round play. The Palmyra pair are in state play for a second year in a row.
“I think there were a lot of nerves,” CHS coach Amanda Marsh said of her observation of the Lady Hornets combo in the morning match. “… They came alive late in the second set, but by then it was too late.”
With good weather permitting the outdoors courts at the Cooper Tennis Complex to be fully used, MSHSAA, per its custom in those circumstances, played consolation brackets in both classes 1 and 2, both in singles and doubles. That permitted state qualifiers who lost in the opening round, such as the Lady Hornets pair, an opportunity to play at least two matches and, potentially, finish as high as fifth place.
The tournament will conclude Saturday.
