Wrestling Hornets split double-dual at Lawson Thursday, Jan. 25, downing understaffed Lathrop 57-21 and losing 45-34 to Lawson.

LAWSON, Mo. — A double-dual split Thursday improved the Chillicothe High School wrestling Hornets’ 2017-18 season record in dual matches to 17-5, but also made mathematically-certain this year’s squad would not produce the Hornets’ third 20-wins season in the 4-years tenure of head coach Chad Smith.
Aided significantly by Lathrop having six “open” weights – including everything from 126 pounds to 152, the Hornets bested the Mules 57-21. That margin of victory was the exact 36 points CHS netted from the Lathrop forfeits.
Against a Lawson squad with, like Chillicothe, a full lineup, the Hornets were unable to score a win from 138 pounds through 170 and sustained a 45-34 defeat.
The mat Hornets have only two duals and two non-dual regular-season tournaments remaining before the Feb. 9-10 Class 2 district tournament at Excelsior Springs, so the most dual wins they could manage would be 19.
They’ll have their chance to reach that total at home Tuesday night (Jan. 30) when they host both Centralia and Marceline on “Senior Night.” The action will begin at the middle school fieldhouse at 5:30 p.m.
At Lawson Thursday, only two CHS’ wrestlers – senior 182=pounder Kayde Burton and junior 285-pounder Keegan Valdez – were victorious by fall in both of their bouts.
Burton, a prime prospect for a high finish at state next month, hiked his season record to a team-best 34-4 by pinning his Lathrop opponent in 5:03 and his Lawson foe at 47 seconds.
Valdez, on the comeback trail after a knee injury sustained in his first-round state match 11 months ago, continued his climb toward the 20-wins plateau with a 2:25 victory in the Lathrop dual and a 2:42 triumph against Lawson. He’s now 18-5.
Winners for the Hornets in their only bouts Thursday were Colton Sewell at 126 pounds and Lavery Jones at 132. Neither had a Lathrop Mule to face before junior Jones prevailed after 5:44 against his Lawson Cardinals foe and sophomore Sewell finished his in 2:36. Sewell now has 29 bout wins this season and Jones joined Burton in the 30-wins “club” at 31.
Joining Valdez and Burton in beating an actual Lathrop opponent were CHS 160-pounder Donald McCracken and 106-pounds Sheldon Rader. McCracken won by fall a second before the 2-minutes first period would have ended. Rader gained a 7-2 decision.
In the Cardinals clash, Chillicothe got off to a promising start via Sewell’s and Jones’ wins by pin. However, by the time another Hornet won, Lawson had won five in a row by fall and Chillicothe would not catch up.
Following Burton’s and Valdez’s victories, Connor Keithley pinned his 113-pounds opponent at 2:46 and Zack Boyles earned a 15-6 major decision at 120 to conclude the match.
