Senior scorched Smithville course for a 3-over-par 75 to place fourth overall, third among non-team state qualifiers in Class 3 sectional tournament Monday, May 7
SMITHVILLE, Mo. — Chillicothe (Mo.) High School boys’ golf Hornets senior Hayden Montgomery shot an excellent 3-over-par 38-37–75 Monday to finish third among the non-team-qualifying golfers in the 2018 Class 3 boys' golf sectional tournament.
That finish earned Montgomery the right to play in next week’s state tournament at the Lake of the Ozarks.
It will be Montgomery’s third trip to the state tourney, which this year is to be contested on the Old Kinderhook course at Camdenton Monday-Tuesday, May 14-15.
To advance to state, golfers not on one of the top two teams at sectional had to have one of the 12-best individual scores. Kansas City private schools Pembroke Hill and St. Pius X claimed the two team berths at stake at Smithville Monday.
Montgomery’s 75 on the Posse course at the Paradise Pointe Golf Course, his best 2018 round, unofficially was nine strokes below his season average. It was tied for fourth-best in the tourney among all players. A Pembroke Hill player was sectional champion with a 3-under-par 69.
