Young squad unable to advance any single or doubles entry to non-team sectional play in Saturday action dominated by Trenton
EXCELSIOR SPRINGS, Mo. — A 2018 Chillicothe High School boys’ tennis season which began with a squad almost devoid of varsity-experienced players, but saw significant growth of talent and experience which led to six dual-match wins, drew to a close Saturday when none of the 2018 Hornets four entries were able to place in the top two in either singles or doubles play in the non-team phase of district competition.
While all four entries – juniors Tyler Maasdam and Seth Batye in singles and the combinations of junior Grahm Mayers/senior Gun-nar Young and junior Matt Callen/sophomore Noah Crowe in doubles – had some success and highly-competitive play, none were able to post more than one match win and thus did not net one of the top-2 finishes in either style of tennis needed to participate in state-qualifying sectional play.
In doubles, Mayers/Young began with a comeback win over their first-round foe, 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 before losing to the eventual run-nersup from Richmond 2-6, 1-6.
Crowe/Callen also went the full three sets in the first round against a Cameron combo, but, after losing the first set on a tiebreaker, then rallyingto force a third, dropped the match 6-7(5), 6-3, 3-6.
After a first-round bye, Maas-dam raced to a 6-1 win over eventual repeat runnerup Gabe Swann of Trenton before losing the last two sets 3-6, 4-6.
Batye defeated his third different 2018 Cameron foe in straight 6-3 sets in the first round before falling to the hosts’ No. 2 player
4-6, 3-6 to be eliminated.
District team champion Trenton had a huge day in the non-team action, taking both of the top two singles places and first in doubles, as well.
