CLARINDA, Iowa — “At this point, it doesn’t really matter the way it looks. We just want to walk away with the win.”
Those were the parting words from Chillicothe Mudcats head coach Adam Steyer last night before climbing aboard the team bus and heading from southwest Iowa to Omaha following his team’s crucial, but shaky, 7-5 MINK League victory over the Clarinda A’s.
Chillicothe held a 7-1 lead in the seventh inning, yet had to escape a bases-loaded situation in the Clarinda eighth which had the potential tying run in scoring position and go-ahead man at first and the possible tying run at second again with one out in the ninth.
Mark Robinette struck out the last two A’s to freeze runners at second and third in the ninth to secure the victory at last.
The Mudcats won their fourth in a row, tying their season high, to advance their league record to 22-13 and inch them past the St. Joseph Mustangs and back into first place by percentage points in the league’s North Division. St. Joseph, 23-14 in MINK action, played a non-league game Sunday.
Clarinda, in first place as recently as Friday following a Thursday win over Chillicothe, lost its fourth straight and now sits only 20-16.
