ST. JOSEPH — Back, for the first time, to the site of their very first game ever two years ago, the Chillicothe High School soccer Lady Hornets constructed a 2009 season-opening victory Brick by Brick with some “Rock” mixed in.
Transplanted to goalkeeper to fill a vacancy there, Lady Hornets junior Meredith Brick made eight saves to register a shutout in her first appearance in net while twin sister Madeline Brick and Rochelle “Rock” Gillilan pounded home two goals apiece – all in the first half – as Chillicothe blanked host St. Joseph: Lafayette 4-0 yesterday.
The triumph not only got the Lady Hornets booters off on the right foot, but gave Bill Allison a win in his first game as their head coach.
The team’s third coach in three years summarized the outcome as due to “overall good play on an extremely windy evening.”
In addition to the obvious play of the CHS goalkeeper and the goal scorers, Allison reported he and assistant Lance Harvey were very happy with the play of Kati Jo Ross, Catherine Tipton, Kylie Barton, and Brooke Westcott, the last of which “took a beating but never once quit playing,” Allison praised.
The coach also cited Lacey Nibarger for “some exceptional passes to open the field up,” and freshman Lynzie Colvin for solid play off the bench.
In a replication of the Lady Hornets’ all-time debut at Lafayette in 2007, the scoring was opened with a shot from Ma. Brick. Two years ago, that was all CHS managed as Lafayette came back to spoil that inaugural outing with a 4-1 decision.
This time, Chillicothe quickly followed with a goal by Gillilan as the Lady Hornets controlled the ball most of the first half with the wind at their backs. The Lady Hornets outshot the Lady Irish 10-5 in the first half and Ma. Brick and Gillilan tallied again in that order later in the half for a 4-0 Chillicothe lead at intermission.
Lafayette had a few breakaway chances, but those were shut down by Me. Brick reading and reacting well to come out and grab several potentially-dangerous balls.
“Meredith did an outstanding job in her first full game of minding the net,” saluted Allison.
It took the Lady Hornets defense a little while to get used to playing with four backliners, instead of three with a “sweeper,” as they had in previous years, the coach noted. However, once they got settled in, the CHS defenders – led by Ross and Barton – did a good job.
Knowing Lafayette would have the aid of the wind in the second half and would be pressing to try to get back in the game, Allison made a positions adjustment, moving Ma. Brick and Gillilan from forward back to midfield to help control the ball a little more and provide some extra defensive coverage.
