CAMERON — The Chillicothe High School basketball Hornets seemed to bring a little something extra with them to the Cameron High School court Friday night for the consolation game of the Cameron Invitational tournament. When they left it, they had a little something extra, too.
For the first time since 2007 and the first time under the tutelage of Matt Brownsberger, their third-year head coach, the Hornets brought a trophy home from a tournament.
Building a big early lead with a 20-0 skein and maintaining it until the very late going, the CHS boys claimed a 55-45 victory and the consolation hardware. It was the Hornets’ first “place” finish since taking second in the 2007 district tournament.
“Bryce Young and Brett Stephens, our two seniors, have never gone 2-1 in a tournament – have two wins in a tournament – and taken home a trophy or plaque or anything,” the Hornets coach pointed out. “It’s been a while since we, as a program, have done that, so tonight was a huge step for us.”
Not only did Chillicothe earn a trophy, but it posted consecutive victories for the first time in 2009-10. Friday’s triumph brought the Hornets’ overall mark this season to 5-10 heading into the bulk of their Midland Empire Conference schedule.
The Hornets will play the first of eight non-tournament games in 18 days to wind up the regular season and its second MEC contest Tuesday at home against a strong Smithville squad led by tall Dillon Deck.
“He’s definitely a load,” Brownsberger said of the 6’7” junior, “and they’ve got some other players to go with him.”
Tuesday’s tripleheader of varsity, junior-varsity, and freshman contests will tip off with the youngest group at 5 p.m.
