After one inning, Friday night’s Chillicothe Mudcats and Topeka Golden Giants game at “June” Shaffer Memorial Park made an abrupt U-turn. That proved unfortunate for the home team.
A four-run Golden Giants top of the first barely stood up for a lead after the frame, yet it proved to be enough for victory for the Kansas club as pitchers Greg Hill and Dustin Holthous blanked the Mudcats on three hits in the final eight innings of a 5-3 Topeka triumph.
“It started off as a hitters’ game and it ended up as a pitchers’ duel with a good defensive game,” acknowledged Chillicothe head coach Justin “Jud” Kindle, whose team finally was able to play a game to a 9-inning conclusion for the first time in six days.
The defeat squared the Mudcats’ MINK League record at 1-1 and moved them to 4-3 overall.
